Echocardiography

Days test performed:  Monday – Friday varying times

Time:  A transthoracic echocardiogram takes approximately 45 minutes to perform.

An echocardiogram is also known as a cardiac ultrasound.  Ultrasound looks at the function of the heart.  This is achieved by bouncing sound waves off the internal heart structures.

The test involves lying on a bed on your left hand side.  A Sonographer will apply gel to a probe and move it over your chest in order to obtain various views of your heart.

This information is stored in a digital format and then interpreted by the Sonographer and Cardiologist.
