Department of Cardiology - Testing Unit

Electrocardiography

Days test performed:  Monday – Friday

An ECG takes approximately 10 minutes to perform.

ECG is an abbreviation for electrocardiogram.  An ECG records the electrical activity of the heart.  The test only takes about five minutes and involves lying on a bed and having sticky electrodes attached to your chest.  Leads from an ECG recorder are then connected to the electrodes.  A paper tracing of your heart’s rhythm is then generated by the recorder.  An ECG does not involved needles and is absolutely painless.

Outpatient ECGs are performed in the Cardiology Testing Unit.  We also offer a mobile service for patients on the wards.
