Transoesphageal Echocardiography - (TOE)

A TOE gathers information in the same way as a transthoracic echocardiogram.  However, for this test a narrow probe is swallowed in a similar way to an endoscope.  Information is obtained by looking from behind the heart and is stored in a digital format.  This procedure is usually a follow-up to a transthoracic echocardiogram to acquire more detailed information.

Details of your admission will be mailed to you prior to your procedure.

Preparation involves fasting and the signing of a consent form.  You will be admitted to the Cardiac Catheter Theatre as a day patient and given a mild sedation through an IV cannula just prior to the procedure.

A TOE usually takes around half an hour and discharge occurs 2 to 4 hours post procedure.
