| Fremantle Hospital
and Health Service is proud to offer world-class cardiac services to the population living
south of the river and the south-western corridor. Fremantle Hospital first
commenced cardiac services in 1977 with the purchase of an ECG machine and the appointment
of its first consultant cardiologist, Dr. Geoffrey Lane. In 1990, the first filmless
digital Catheter Laboratory in Australia was commissioned at Fremantle Hospital and about
1500 cardiac catheter examinations are now done each year. In 1993, the first
angioplasty procedure was performed at Fremantle, approximately 300 of which are now
performed annually. In 1997, cardiothoracic surgery was established at Fremantle
Hospital. The unit, now led by Mr Ian Gilfillan, helps more than 400 people with
heart or lung operations each year. Cardiac Services at Fremantle
Hospital boasts two cardiothoracic theatres, two digital cardiac catheterisation theatres,
a modern coronary care unit, fully equipped cardiology testing unit and an internationally
recognised research team. Cardiac
Services not only offers an extensive range of invasive and non-invasive diagnostic
procedures such as coronary angiography, echocardiography, exercise stress testing and
Holter monitoring, but also various coronary revascularisation procedures such as
cardiothoracic surgery, balloon angioplasty, stenting and rotablation. In providing
these services, Fremantle Hospital now offers a continuity of care unsurpassed within
Western Australia. |
